Numa Numa - Viral Celebrity

Numa Numa Craze!

"The video featuring Gary Brolsma dancing to the "Numa Numa Dance" was released on Newgrounds.com in December of 2004. In September of 2006 the video hit over 15 million views on Newgrounds.com alone, not to mention countless number of websites that is is now hosted on."

This "about" section on the "Numa Network" goes on to explain that it was featured in multiple newspapers, television, and radio. The original song for the "Numa Numa Dance" is from the Romanian lyrics of the chorus from the song "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone.

Gary goes on to explain that he was rather shocked that the video got so many hits so quickly on a whim to put it up on Newgrounds.com website. He also went on after the "Numa Numa Dance" craze to do more videos but none had the viral craze of the first video.

Viral Videos

Generally the idea for a video to go viral is for many people to see it and tell others. Word of mouth is how a video goes viral in a community or society. Major video sharing sites such as YouTube and CollegeHumor are two examples of video sharing sites that have produced many viral videos.

"Numa Numa Dance" was not the first nor will it be the last video to go viral. Even today people reference different viral videos from political statements, celebrities, advertisements, and entertainment. Some other examples of viral videos are "Man throws shoe at Bush", "Lady Gaga Telephone (Clean)", many Superbowl commercials, and many more. However fun some of these videos are some aren't as goodhearted as others.

Bullying has always been a problem and will continue to be a problem in society. Cyber bullying is a fairly recent development in society as more people become connected through the World Wide Web. Sometimes a group of people or society clings to these bad actions and attitudes and a video or picture goes viral. On the flip side of the darker parts of viral videos there are pluses to them. Sometimes new phrases such as "Waaazzzuuuup!" from the Superbowl commercial one year brings people together. For a long time after the commercial played the phrase was still used.

As long as there is a way for people to talk and share information and ideas things will continue to go viral. Videos going viral is just one example of how things in society seem to "catch on" and stay on the public's interest for a time. Sometimes viral things last a long time but many times they only last for a short amount of time until the next "cool" thing takes it's place.
